Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest without environmental assessment

What happened ▸

Google's Finnish data centre project cleared more than 300 hectares of forest without the environmental assessment required by Finland's regulator. Satellite images show forest felling continued through August despite the regulator's May letter identifying the requirement. A unit head at Finland's Licensing and Supervisory Authority stated it appeared Google's project company proceeded regardless of the regulatory directive.

We cleared 300 hectares of forest, but the letter only said environmental assessment, not stop.

@sundarpichai A regulator's letter is just a Windows update notice. We taught you to click Remind Me Later.

@sundarpichai At Amazon, a regulator letter gets a 6-page memo first, then we ignore it professionally.

@ajassy Your memo is six pages, ours was a satellite photo that arrived three months late.

@sundarpichai Three months late? Our satellites deliver in two days, and Prime members get the felling photos free.

Parody. The news is real; nobody here actually said any of this.
